Bernhard Stoss
Violin maker
(1784 – 1854)
Bernhard Stoss was the son of Joseph Anton Stoss. He moved to Vienna in 1806 and became a citizen in 1813. His work focused almost exclusively on Italian models. He created fine imitations of Amati and Stradivari, using high-quality orange and red-brown varnish. His designs reflected Stradivarian ideas rather than the typical Amati or Stainer style. In the Museum of Vienna, there is one cornerless violin, in a guitar form, dated 1821.
