Johann Georg Hellmer
Violin maker
(b. 1687)
Johann Georg Hellmer was a pupil of Thomas Edlinger. He exhibited fine workmanship on a model derived from Amati and Klotz, featuring a diminutive scroll. Fine materials and pale yellow varnish were used prior to c. 1740, after which he introduced an orange-brown oil varnish. Instruments were sometimes branded in the chin of the scroll. He produced several violas, with cellos being the most successful. Facsimile labels were utilized by Saxon factory producers in the 19th century. One of his instruments was owned by Beethoven.
