John Walter Skinner apprenticed as a cabinet maker. He worked as a silversmith and became an amateur violin maker in retirement starting in 1908. He established his professional practice in 1923 on Psalter Lane, Sheffield, and moved to Dawlish in 1930. His work included Guarneri, Stradivari, and personal models.
