Nicolas Simon, known from his brand as Simon FR, was born in Mirecourt in 1806 and died there in 1864. Simon appears to have established himself under his own name around 1840, although relatively little is known about his earlier training and employment. His bows are most commonly branded SIMON FR. The meaning of the initials has long been debated, but the generally accepted explanation is that they refer to his wife, Madeleine Frébinet, whose maiden name may have been incorporated into the brand in accordance with a practice occasionally found among Mirecourt craftsmen.

Following Simon’s death, bows continued to appear under the Simon FR name, apparently reflecting the continued involvement of his widow in the business until her death in 1874.
