James Findlay
(1815 – 1896)
James Findlay worked as a weaver and was also known as a fiddle player. He was an active maker from around 1829 and was credited with 500 instruments. He employed several assistants, including J. Marnie, A. MacNicol, J. Glenday, and William Findlay, who were presumably related. His work was slightly coarse and followed a vaguely Neapolitan model. The soundholes featured short wings and small lower circles. Narrow edges were set with broad purfling. He crafted a neatly carved head with a broad chin. The materials used were plain, and the varnish was a rather intransparent red-brown.
