Giovanni Schwarz
Violin maker
(1865 – 1953)
Giovanni Schwarz apprenticed to his uncle E. Degani until 1888, when he established himself in Venice. He was a prolific and significant maker known for classical models. Much of his work was directly commissioned and exported. He received a gold medal in Rome in 1916. His work was very refined, beautifully finished, and featured a rich golden yellow-brown varnish, with some pieces exhibiting a redder shade. Fine craftsmanship was evident in the edging, purfling, and deeply cut scroll. Excellent materials were used. He branded his work on the back button and lower rib with `G. S. '.
