Bernhard Schwartz established himself as a musician and luthier in Strasbourg around 1764. He became a member of the city guild in 1780 and was recorded in archives as a 'luthier' in 1796 at 69 Finkwillerstrasse. A small viola from 1796 is preserved in the Strasbourg Museum.
