Joseph Laurent Mast
Violin maker
–
Joseph Laurent Mast was the son and pupil of Jean Laurent Mast. He apprenticed to Didier Nicolas and established himself independently in Toulouse around 1800, on the rue des Balances. His work exhibited a more classically graceful style than that of Jean Laurent, while still being recognizably Mirecourtian. The arching was widely scooped and of medium height, appearing quite flat across the center. The soundholes were rather narrow and upright, with an elegant shape. The purfling mitres were strongly deflected across the corners. He used traditional Mirecourt yellow varnish, as well as a superior orange-red recipe, and employed good materials. Some of his instruments featured painted and decorated backs. He was also a prolific guitar maker. His work was branded internally and beneath the back button with "Mast Fils. Toulouse. ".
