Max Willibald Schmidt trained in Markneukirchen, Germany. He emigrated to the USA in 1913 and worked in San Francisco and Seattle. He retired to Boise but continued to make new instruments until his death. He created 50 instruments, including some fine cellos, and used Guarneri-derived model violins with spirit varnish.
