Stephen Saunders
Violin maker
(b. 1840)
Stephen Saunders was a cello and double bass player and an amateur luthier. He gained access to the Stradivari owned by Dr. Selle of Richmond, who was also a patron of John Dodd. He followed this Stradivari pattern as well as his personal models. His workmanship was good but not distinguished, utilizing Whitelaw's varnish, which was red-brown in color. He branded his work below the endpin. A manuscript label was present.
