Trained by his uncle, Christian Friedrich Wilhelm Knopf, Carl Heinrich Knopf (1839–1875) worked for the Löwendall firm before establishing his own Berlin workshop in 1868. The trade passed on again in the next generation: his son, Heinrich Richard Knopf, studied both under his father and, as Carl Heinrich himself had, under an uncle.
