Emilio Celani

Emidio Celani was one of many 19th century makers in the Marche region who was a successful autodidact with mostly local clientele. He seems to have made more plucked string instruments than violins, perhaps because the ornate craftsmanship involved yielded higher profits than for simpler bowed instruments. In general his work is rustic in proportion to his humble origins and undiscerning patrons. Good-quality local materials were used, and while details show considerable haste, the proportions are good. Celani's younger brother Constantino was rather more prolific, especially after Emidio's premature death in 1898.
