Dudley B. Reed
Violin maker

Dudley B. Reed was a part-time violin maker active from 1922. He was a pupil of Carl Hildebrand. His various occupations included being a baker, farmer, and pilot. He retired in 1953 and then concentrated on instruments, working in Gainesville until 1971. Over 500 instruments were produced, with a significant proportion being prefabricated and only finished by him; these were labelled and sold as student grade. He created Stradivari model violins and Tertis viola patterns, using fine materials and dark red-brown spirit varnish.
