Gabriel (Gábor) Lemböck
Violin maker
(1814 – 1892)
Along with his teacher Johann Baptist Schweitzer, Gabriel Lemböck is considered one of the finest makers of the Vienna school. He was born in Budapest and studied there with Schweitzer in the 1830s before opening his own workshop in Vienna in 1840. Like his teacher, he used various models, but the craftsmanship is uniformly superb. The graceful f-holes and purfling especially showcase his finesse, and the luminous varnish is of high quality. Lemböck used several different labels over the course of his career, and often branded his initials to the button and endpin.
