Paolo Castello
Violin maker
(c. 1740 – 1817)
A follower of Genoa school founder Bernardo Calcani, Paolo Castello was probably mostly self-taught. His somewhat coarse craftsmanship suggests haste, but the wide purfling and rough scrolls are counterbalanced by some elegant details, such as the f-holes. The varnish is in general quite good, and he used various models, most often of Stradivari. The overall quality of his output ranges widely, but some individual examples can be fine.
