Andrea Castagneri
Violin maker
(1696 – 1747)
Italo-French violin maker Andrea Castagneri was born in Turin in 1696 and moved to Paris around 1720. He worked as a dealer of antique Cremonese instruments as well as a maker and restorer. Castagneri mostly built on an undersized Stradivari model, but the scrolls are more deeply carved and the f-holes more open than in a typical pattern of that maker. Varnish ranges from a reddish-brown to golden brown. Numerous instruments exemplifying a mixture of Italian and French traits have been attributed to him, even some that are obviously of inferior quality to his usual standard of craftsmanship. His printed labels are generally in either French or Italian, or some combination of the two.
