François Chanot
Violin maker
(1788 – 1825)
François Chanot was a gifted mathematician and scientist whose primary career was as a naval engineer. He trained in Mirecourt with his father, Joseph Chanot, and during a break from the navy due to an injury from 1816 to 1818, he designed a simplified and acoustically enhanced version of the cornerless violin. After being found tonally satisfactory, development continued once he rejoined the navy in 1818, with the company of Lété in Mirecourt taking over the manufacture and hiring J. B. Vuillaume to assist. Although it was likely the best-conceived of many alternative patent designs for the violin in modern history, the François Chanot violin has not endured over time. His younger brother, Georges Chanot I, also assisted him during this period.
