Natale Carletti
Violin maker
(1904 – 1979)
Son and student of Carlo Carletti, Natale Carletti took over his father's workshop in Pieve di Cento with his younger brother Nullo in 1941. His output was impressive, consisting of virtually every kind of stringed instrument except guitars. He was also a cellist and produced about 200 cellos. The period from 1945–68 represents his peak as a craftsman. Stradivari is the most common inspiration, using the 'San Lorenzo' Stradivari violin as a model. The workmanship is precise but not affected, with deeply carved scrolls and full archings. Varnish is of a mixed composition, ranging from red to golden yellow, and labels are often signed. Instruments are generally branded internally and sometimes externally on the back: 'CARLETTI'.
