Emil Hjorth & Sons
Violin maker
–
Emil Hjorth & Sons was founded by Emil Theodor Hjorth, who was the son, pupil, and successor of Johannes Hjorth. He worked for Lembock in Vienna in 1863, for Bernadel in Paris in 1864, and spent two years in London. Hjorth served as the instrument repairer for the royal orchestra in Denmark and created violins, violas, and cellos modeled after Stradivari and Guarneri, finished with fine oil varnish. The workshop was renamed Emil Hjorth & Sons in 1905 when his sons, Othon and Knud, joined the business. Emil retired in 1906, leaving the shop to his sons, and it has since been run by Knud's son, Arne, and is now overseen by Arne's son, Mads. It is the longest-running family business in the violin world
