Clifford A. Hoing
(1903 – 1989)
Clifford A. Hoing trained as a wood carver and worked with Eric Gill before he began making violins in 1935. He used the Guarneri del Gesù Vieuxtemps' violin and the Stradivari 'Messie' violin as models. His work featured fine craftsmanship and materials, along with his own oil varnish that ranged from golden to dark red-brown. He created personal viola model plans that were widely shared for the benefit of other makers. In 1949, he received a Diploma of Honour at The Hague. His instruments were signed internally and branded on the top block with 'C. A. Hoing. ' A printed label read: Clifford A. Hoing / High Wycombe, / Bucks. 19..
