Charles Claude François Darche
Violin maker
(1820 – 1874)
Charles Claude François Darche was a pupil of N. F. Vuillaume in Brussels. He established his own shop there in 1845. His work, based on the Stradivari model, was of high quality, but he was often criticized for using harmful wood treatments to artificially age the materials. The varnish he applied was a thin, hard type of poor quality. He participated in a quartet at the Munich Exhibition in 1854. He was also a highly regarded restorer who worked extensively on the Andrea Amati cello from the 'Charles IX' set.
