Bow maker

Repair and restoration work seems to have taken up most of Paul Émile Miquel's time after 1891, once he'd relocated his workshop to Nancy and begun supplying bows to other houses — Jacquot locally, and the Chardon firm back in Paris — rather than building a large body of work under his own name. What he did make traces a real stylistic arc: nickel-silver-mounted Vuillaume-pattern bows early on, still carrying some trace of the fading Peccatte school, giving way after about 1890 to a silver-mounted style closer to Bazin's. He'd grown up in the trade — son of Nicolas Miquel, a Mirecourt maker of violins, bows, and organs, and Victoire Chaudy — training and then working alongside his father in the Faubourg Saint-Vincent before opening his own shop at 5 rue du Pré de Paradis after 1870. He married Marie Joséphine Gaspard in 1880 and had a son, André, and died in Nancy in February 1911.
