Martin Mathias Fichtl II
Violin maker
(1682 – 1768)
Martin Mathias Fichtl was the son and pupil of Martin Mathias Fichtl (I) and ranked among the finest early Viennese makers. He utilized a disciplined Stainer model, characterized by a beautifully finished appearance and devoid of the exaggerated traits often found in Stainer imitations. His soundholes were widely spaced and expertly cut. Fichtl applied a very fine red-brown varnish over a golden ground, which sometimes darkened with oxidization over time. His work is noted with the inscriptions Martinus Mathias Fichtl / fec. Vienna. 1736 and Martinus Fichtl / fecit Viennae. 1739.
