François 'Malakoff' Brugère
Violin maker
(1822 – 1875)
François 'Malakoff' Brugère was the brother of Charles Joseph Brugère. He worked for Pierre Silvestre in Lyons, Daniel in Marseilles, and Bonnel in Rouen. He returned to Mirecourt, where he worked indirectly for Justin Derazey, producing many instruments with his label. According to Vannes, he adopted the name 'Malakoff' after serving in the Crimea in 1855. His work was generally good and highly professional in the typical Mirecourt style, though it was often somewhat heavy and overstated in size and detail. The cellos and double basses were better proportioned and received admiration.
