Johann Christoph Leidolff
Violin maker
(1690 – 1758)
Johann Christoph Leidolff was the son of Nicolaus Leidolff. He was appointed as a luthier to the Viennese court. His large workshop had several assistants, resulting in slightly inconsistent production. The models were fairly crude Stainer or Amati types, featuring fine materials and neat finishes. His early work utilized good dark brown varnish, while he later introduced a red tint applied over a dark stained ground.
