Daniel Achatius Stadlmann
Violin maker
(c. 1680 – 1744)
Daniel Achatius Stadlmann produced very fine and accurate work on the Stainer model. The arching had a medium height that was not unnecessarily exaggerated. He crafted a neatly cut concentric and well-balanced scroll. The varnish was a turbid golden-yellow, although it sometimes appeared as a darker red-brown with good texture and consistency. He used handsome materials. The one- and two-piece backs were nearly always of pretty figure, often in bird's-eye maple. Commercial dealers regularly abused the name and label for inferior factory-produced work. Some instruments were branded: `D. A. S. '.
