Joseph Chanot
Violin maker
(1760 – 1832)
Joseph Chanot was the first violin maker of the Chanot dynasty and the father of François and Georges I. By family tradition, he was a farmer and operated a general store in Boulaincourt, where he may have started selling violins. He relocated to Mirecourt sometime in or before 1786, where his violin making activities increased. His work reflected the typical Mirecourt style of the period, featuring a slightly rounded arch and elongated outline, with long upright soundholes positioned relatively close to the edge. Although somewhat unrefined in detail, it was of good standard, with varnish in red-brown or yellow. He inscribed directly onto the interior of the back: 'Joseph Chanot Mirecourt 1790' and branded the button with a fleur-de-lys: 'I. Chanot'. No known examples exist that are dated before 1790.
