Gaetano Pasta
Violin maker
(c. 1679 – c. 1760)
Gaetano Pasta was the son of Bartolomeo Pasta and was active in Brescia from around 1694. His work featured exuberant classical forms along the lines of Amati and Rogeri, characterized by impetuous craftsmanship. A very fine and pure example is held at the Royal College of Music in London: a small cello with a back length of 703mm (27. 5 inches), long elegant corners, a full broad arch, and a well-balanced, proportioned outline. The soundholes, resembling those of Amati, were well-positioned, and the back displayed scratched and painted purfling, while the front had conventional purfling. The head was rather crude, with volutes not well defined due to shallow undercuts, and it was quite narrow across the eyes. The varnish was a thin pale yellow.
