Anton Hofmann
Violin maker
(1814 – 1871)
Anton Hofmann apprenticed to J. Martin Stoss in Vienna and succeeded to his business in 1838. He was appointed maker to the Austrian Imperial Court. His personal model featured dark red oil varnish. Most instruments were made by his assistant W. T. Guterman from 1851 to 1866. Cellos from the earlier period were highly regarded; later examples utilized cheaper materials and poor spirit varnish. Many commercial quality instruments from this later period followed Cremonese and Stainer models. He was highly regarded as a guitar maker.
