Sebastian Dallinger
Violin maker
(1735 – 1809)
Sebastian Dallinger created very good work on the Stainer model, featuring a high arch and deep edge flute. Instruments produced later were less extreme. The finish was very refined, and the scroll was finely carved, although it was sometimes replaced with a Stainer-like lion's head. The varnish was somewhat thin and not improved by a dull ground. It was usually clear yellow, but some degraded examples had turned dark brown, while others exhibited a substantial red-brown coat. At least one example bore a large brand on the upper back: 'Sebastian Dallinger Vienna 1783'. A printed label was also present.
