Pauli Merling
Violin maker
(1894 – 1976)
Pauli Merling apprenticed with Bojesen Petersen before relocating to Dresden to work for Rudolphe Heckel. He was later employed by Rummelhoff Hansen in Oslo and Emil Hjorth in Copenhagen. In 1921, he established himself independently in Copenhagen. He received a first prize medal and diplomas of honour at The Hague in 1949. His work featured classical Italian models with shaded varnish and exhibited very high-quality craftsmanship. He branded his instruments in cursive style: 'Pauli Merling'.
