Leopold & Ferdinand Wolff
Violin maker
(c. 1864 – 1914)
Leopold & Ferdinand Wolff established a factory in 1864. Many instruments were exported to England and labeled as if they were made there. They produced good professional work on Stradivari models. In 1888, they patented a mute practice violin made from a simple mahogany frame without back or front plates. The business was continued by Julius, Leopold's son, from 1912 to 1914 after the brothers' deaths, and after Julius' demise during World War I, it was managed by his widow. Finally, it was taken over by Fritz Mansbacher in 1922.
