Johann Josef Stadlmann was the son, pupil, and successor of Daniel Stadlmann, appointed as a luthier to the Viennese court. His work, while similar to that of his father, was generally regarded as inferior. He mainly used a very thin dark and opaque red-brown varnish, which was considered one of the less attractive characteristics of the Viennese school. There was some evidence of Stradivari influence in his later work, and he was known for making violas and cellos.
