François Pillement
Violin maker
–
François Pillement was known as 'Tillement père', as some authorities believed that 'Jean François Pillement' was his son, although this appears not to be accurate; 'Jean' and 'Jean François' referred to the same person. He produced many fine violins, cellos, and double basses, which were branded and labelled variously as 'Mirecourt', 'Paris', and 'Cremona', yet all were made in Mirecourt. Henley attributed his early work to the school of Gavinies style, while his later work was based on Amati and ultimately Stradivari models. His workmanship was not of the highest quality, and the materials he used were typically plain. The varnish was good but varied in shade and texture. He branded his instruments internally with 'F. Pillementi / Père. A Cremona', 'Pillemont père/ à Mirecourt', or 'F. Pillemont père/ à Paris'.
