Joseph Meyer
Violin maker
(b. 1610)
Joseph Meyer was the maker of the Alemannische school. He was the son of Theus Meyer and a pupil of his step-father Adam Kirner. He gained his master's licence in 1630 and remained active until 1673. His typical work from the Alemannische school was characterized by long, upright soundholes, often with the wings not separated from the outer edges, long projecting corners, and extensive decorative purfling and pyrography in floral and geometric shapes. The scrolls featured a very steeply turned chin. The ribs were set into a channel cut into the back, with the neck fitted without a separate upper block, and the bassbar was central and carved directly from the wood of the front.
