Bert Smith




Bert Smith apprenticed as a motor engineer in Bowness. He began making violins as a self-taught amateur in 1938. Later, he was employed as an engineer at the slate quarries of Coniston and worked full-time as a luthier from 1958. He used the 1716 Stradivari 'Messie' and the 1742 Guarneri del Gesù 'Tieuxtemps' violins as models.
