Arthur Richard Bultitude
Bow maker
(1908 – 1990)
Arthur Bultitude began his apprenticeship to the firm of W.E. Hill & Sons in 1922 at the tender age of 14. He became a student of William Retford and profited from Retford's immense knowledge of bow restoration techniques. Bultitude's Hill bows are marked with the numeral 6.
Military service is a frequent theme in the history of Hill bow makers. After working in an aircraft factory during WWII and returning to the shop for 16 years, Bultitude left to start his own workshop in Kent. Later bows were built to suit particular customers and stray from the Tourte model developed and endorsed by the Hill firm. The frogs display a variety of interesting motifs. Bultitude was awarded an MBE and retired in 1982.
