Archibald Ritchie
(1833 – 1902)
Archibald Ritchie was the best maker of the Dundee school. He was a part-time self-taught maker who was professionally employed at Dundee harbour. His early work was based on a Stradivari-derived model, but he later preferred the Guarneri style. He completed over 200 violins, which were generally quite impressive, though somewhat unsophisticated. His violins featured a fine Whitelaw varnish that ranged from orange to dark red. They were branded internally and occasionally beneath the back button with 'A Ritchie'. Manuscript labels were also present.
