John Alfred Bolander II
Bow maker / Violin maker
(1893 – 1990)
John Alfred Bolander was the son and successor of John Bolander (I). He became active in San Francisco in 1915 and spent many years repairing band instruments before moving to San Jose in 1931. He learned bow making with Alfred Lanini from 1943 to 1946 and joined him to establish a business in 1946. In 1978, he finally moved to Santa Cruz. He authored two titles: Bow Making: 1000 Bows and a Tribute and Violin Bow Making (1969). His early bows featured a hatchet-head, and frogs were generally made from mountain mahogany. Over 3, 000 bows were made, and they were branded: BOLANDER.
