Christoph Friedrich Hunger
Violin maker
(1718 – 1787)
Christoph Friedrich Hunger was the son of Samuel Hunger and a pupil of A. B. Jauch in Dresden. He was employed by J. C. Hoffmann in Leipzig, later succeeding to his business and establishing himself independently there. He was an early German copyist of Stradivarius, while still retaining many Germanic characteristics. His varnish was a clear yellow-brown of good texture, with some that were rather darker and more opaque. He produced fine violas and cellos. Manuscript labels read: Christoph Friedrich Hunger / machte mich in / Borstendorff bey Augustusburg, 1755.
