Karel Vávra
Violin maker
(1903 – 1973)
Karel Vávra worked with his cousin Alfons Vávra in Banská Bystrica until 1931. He established himself independently in Korunni Street, Prague, in 1932. In 1950, he moved to Belehradska Street. His son, Karel II (b. 1935), joined him and later became his successor. He founded the Czech Kruh Umelcu Houslaru (Association of Violinists and Violin Makers). He received awards at The Hague in 1949, Prague in 1954, and Poznan in 1962. He was subsequently appointed as a competition judge at Liège and Poznan. He preferred Guarneri models, although he also used some Stradivari patterns. His varnish was a fine golden- or red-brown, and he utilized first-class materials. Karel Vávra / fecit Pragae. Anno 19..
