Marcel Vatelot
Violin maker
–
Marcel Vatelot was born to parents from Mirecourt and was the great grandson of Blaise, a violin maker from Lorraine. He apprenticed with E. Poirson in Mirecourt and worked in various workshops in Mirecourt until 1899. He then moved to Paris to work for C. Brugere and later for Marchand. He was briefly employed in Nantes. In 1910, he established his own business at 11 rue de Portalis in Paris, quickly gaining a reputation as the leading expert and connoisseur in the city. In 1926, he was appointed luthier to the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris. His son and successor, Etienne (b. 1925), assisted him and officially took over the business in 1959. The shop continues today as Vatelot-Rampal. He produced very fine work on Stradivari models, characterized by a distinctive varnish ranging from golden-orange to dark red, with violas and cellos being particularly sought after.
