Gunther Hellwig
Violin maker
(1903 – 1985)
Gunther Hellwig graduated from the Mittenwald school of violin making. He worked for O. Mfickel in Berlin, J. Hempel in Hamburg, K. Rietz in Lucerne, and from 1928 for A. Dolmetsch in Haslemere, UK, where he developed an interest in historical instruments. He established himself independently in Lübeck in 1932 and was honored as a Master luthier in Berlin in 1936. After spending some time as a prisoner of war in Russia, he returned to Lübeck and successfully revived his workshop. He served as the curator of the musical instrument collections of the Berlin and Lübeck museums. He was a highly regarded restorer and scholar of historical instruments and authored 'Joachim Tielke' (Frankfurt 1980), the standard work on the maker. He was chiefly occupied with restoration work but also made viols and other bowed instruments of very high quality.
