Robert Ballantyne assisted him and succeeded to his business in 1827. His personal model featured a very distinctive manner, characterized by strong, low arches and very good proportions. It included small corners and delicate scrolls, slightly rustic in finish yet highly attractive. The purflings were slender and well-fitted, and local woods were employed. The varnish was of very good quality and texture, golden-orange and highly reflective, although some examples fell below this standard, with the varnish being quite meagre in shades of brown-yellow.
