John Blair
Violin maker
(fl. 1790 – 1822)
John Blair established his work at 8, Potterow and was said to have been a pupil of Matthew Hardie, although the differences in their respective techniques and styles were far greater than any similarities. In terms of workmanship, he had more in common with William Ferguson, another contemporary from Edinburgh, who may have had some association with him. Robert Ballantyne assisted him and succeeded to his business in 1827. His personal model featured a very distinctive manner, characterized by strong, low arches and very good proportions. It included small corners and delicate scrolls, slightly rustic in finish yet highly attractive. The purflings were slender and well-fitted, and local woods were employed. The varnish was of very good quality and texture, golden-orange and highly reflective, although some examples fell below this standard, with the varnish being quite meagre in shades of brown-yellow. His instruments were unlabelled but signed on the interior: 'John Blair, maker, Edinburgh. '.
