Johann Christian Hammig
(1732 – 1816)
Johann Christian Hammig was the son and pupil of Johann Georg Hammig and was admitted to the Violin Makers' Guild in 1751. His work featured well-executed Tyrolean patterns and an extravagant soundhole design derived from Stainer, with the upper and lower wings extending across the table, bringing the lower finial very close to the corner. He preferred plain, one-piece backs and used a golden brown varnish. Instruments dated after 1816 were made by his sons. He branded his instruments with 'I. *C. *H. *'. A manuscript label read: Joh: Christian Hammig /Music. Instr.. 1756. A printed label stated: Johann Christian Hammig / Bass und Instrumentenmacher / in Neukirchen bey Adorf. 1801 and Johann Hammig et Söhne in Neukirchen bei Adorf. 1823.
