Victor Carroll Squier was the adopted son and pupil of Jerome Squier. After learning the craft from his father, he worked for William Peters in Worcester, Massachusetts, as well as Treffle Gervais and George Drapier in Boston. He established himself independently in Battle Creek in 1890 and expanded his business into a large music shop. The first instrument he dated was from 1883. He subsequently made over 950 instruments, primarily careful copies of famous Stradivari originals. He developed his own oil varnish, which he later made and sold commercially.
