János Spiegel
Violin maker
(1876 – 1956)
János Spiegel apprenticed to P. Pilát. He worked for W. J. Schunda from 1896 to 1898 and for R. Laumann from 1898 to 1900. He established himself independently in Budapest in 1903. A prolific maker, he produced around 600 instruments, including 80 cellos, with assistance from various craftsmen in his shop, most of which were exported to the USA. He was succeeded by his employee J. Csapkovits. His models were derived from Stradivari and Guarneri. His work was neat and precise. He used a red-brown varnish until about 1920; thereafter, he mainly used orange.
