Alexander Smillie
Violin maker
–
Alexander Smillie was active from 1887. He was primarily self-taught but appeared to have received assistance from George Duncan and owned two of his violins. By 1887, he established himself at 3, Renton Terrace in Crosshill, Glasgow, and from 1893 to 1901, he operated at 514 Victoria Road. In 1902, his son Andrew joined him, and they settled together in business at 171 St George's Road. He produced more than 300 instruments in a fluent and quite Italianate style, utilizing Stradivari and Guarneri models. His instruments were well-made and oil varnished with Whitelaw's amber preparation in an even red-brown over a good reflective ground. The purfling corners often featured a distinctively turned bee-sting, and the linings ran across the face of the instruments.
