Herman Pourtois
Violin maker
(1903 – 1980)
Herman Pourtois was a doctor of medicine and an amateur violin maker starting in 1934. He studied under A. B. Lambotte in Antwerp. His fine work included Stradivari and Maggini models, as well as viols and pochettes, which were generally recognized to be of high professional standard. He used a red-brown varnish. During the Second World War, he lost everything and was compelled to abandon lutherie until 1948, when he was able to recover sufficiently to resume making instruments. In 1954, he received a diploma of Honour for a quartet in Liège. After his passing, his workshop was continued as Ecole de Lutherie Herman Pourtois by his pupils Aigrisse, Bonne, and Philippart. Instruments were branded with his initials on the back button.
